Enjoy a week-long family vacation at the historic CM Ranch in Dubois Wyoming. Guest stays run from Sunday to Sunday, and the week is filled with activities to please all age groups. Each guest is assigned a horse and comfortable saddle for the week, and our experienced guides will show you beautiful countryside and share their knowledge of the geology, ecology, and history of the area. Fly -fishing is excellent on both the ranch stream and the nearby Wind River. An on-site angler will be happy to provide equipment, take guided fishing trips or just give advice. The ranch cabins are charming and comfortable, and convenient to all of the ranch facilities. Cabins have one, two or three bedrooms with one or more private bathrooms. During the day, guests may ride, fish, hike, swim, or relax as they please. Each evening, there is entertainment or activities which include cookouts, square dancing, cowboy music, weekly rodeo, history talk, and much more. Three meals a day are expertly prepared and served family style in the main dining room. Misc.: The CM Ranch also provides 3 day or longer pack trips into the Simpson Lake Unit of the Wind River Mountains. Pack trips may be taken before, after or during a regular ranch vacation. Our deluxe base camp sits next to Union Lake just outside the Fitzpatrick Wilderness. Guests may stay at base camp and take day trips to fish and sight see, or take a progressive trip and camp near a different glacier lake each night. The package includes two dinner show tickets and two nights camping (RV campsite). Dinner shows are Mondays (Ray Callaway entertaining) and Thursdays (Prickly Pair entertaining). The dinner is a Dutch oven full course meal cooked on site by Cowgirl Catering. The additional camping night can be the night before or after the dinner show.

On the Trail of the SheepEaters This archaeological horse-packing trip to goes to Whiskey Mountain in the Fitzpatrick Wilderness of the Wind River Range. Taylor Outfitters and archaeologist Rich Adams will record several known Mountain Shoshone sites and stone artifacts, gather wild edible plants and cook bighorn sheep meat in steatite cooking vessels for part of the meals. We will be re-creating scenes that have not been seen in the Rocky Mountains for at least a hundred and twenty-five years. We will have some of the most knowledgeable people in this field as resources in an informal outdoor setting. The SheepEaters, a branch of the Mountain Shoshone culture, made their home and lived in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. In years past, little was understood about this culture, but today's evidence shows them to be an unique and thriving people. We will explore the area where this culture centered its life around the magnificant Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. SheepEater wickiups constructed by these Native Americans are still visible. Research into how the technology and tools of these early mountain people is revealing new information every year. This SheepEater home is now recognized as an ancient wildlife and human migration route in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Abundant diversity of wildlife is still seen regularly and native fisheries are prolific along the way. The location of the trip's camp will be a breath-taking high elevation site in the Wind River Mountains at about 10,000 feet. During the trip, we will read accounts about SheepEaters by Osborne Russell, Lewis and Clark and other explorers to understand their insights into this native culture. When packing please try to minimize your gear as much as possible, "think light and compact with layers" as we try to minimze our impact on Yellowstone's backcountry camp sites by limiting the number of pack animals needed for each trip. Directions are: take Hwy 26/287 four miles east of Dubois, then turn and take the Trail Lake Road south for 3 miles to Whiskey Basin. Follow the road left past the Bighorn sheep kiosk and around the meadow. As the road starts to climb the hill, turn right to follow the route around the big meadow past a metal barn. Go about a mile on that road and then turn right on the Whiskey Creek trailhead road and we will be along the creek saddling up the horses. On this 8-day pack trip, we will follow the Nez Perce National Historic Trail as it weaves through Yellowstone's backcountry during the 1877 Nez Perce flight towards Canada. Stories of encounters with soldiers, mercenaries, Indian scouts, and local tourists mingle with Yellowstone's unique setting of wildness, wildflowers, and wildlife. We will ride from Pelican Valley about 12 miles to our first camp in the upper Mist Creek area to see Yellowstone much as the Nez Perce saw this wilderness backcountry. Yellowstone offers a wide array of habitat types from riparian systems to mountain plateaus with an equally wide range of flora and fauna. We will explore these native edible plants and animals along the way. This trip is designed as an educational and historical experience to better understand this special place. We will meet at the Pelican Valley Trailhead (5K3) September 1 at 10: AM.
