Rock Hounding
Wyoming is known among rock hounds for its agates, jade and a variety of fossils. Many of these rocks can be found on the surface, particularly out in the Red Desert where fossilized turtle shells and sharks teeth abound.
For the most part, gems, minerals and fossils can be collected on public lands without a permit. There are some regulations to be aware of, however, so it??u8482 s a good idea to contact the local Bureau of Land Management Office overseeing the area you intend to explore before you set out. Local rockshops in Wind River Country communities can also direct you to good places to search.
